BACKGROUND

Looking back at where my journey started, I always knew I would attend university, but I never imagined I would be a Communication and Media Technology student. I vividly remember a Friday night, sitting on my veranda and having an internal conversation with God, asking how I would ever afford to go to school. I had never experienced the concept of hearing His voice until that night, when I heard: “Start, and I’ll carry you through.” I am Rasheka Muirhead, a young woman who didn’t learn to read until the third grade. Since then, reading has become my favorite thing to do—from novels and self-growth books to cookbooks (everything except movie captions, if I’m honest!). I wasn’t the student who “did great” in primary school, and society often made me believe my best was never enough. Looking back, I’m actually happy I wasn’t great with numbers; it allowed me to become a visual student—the one who enjoys bringing concepts to life and sharing my beliefs.

INTERTEST

I found my love for the arts after transferring to my second high school and joining the debate team. Despite struggling with major social anxiety—to the point of throwing up after every speech—I competed in tournaments island-wide and was eventually honored with a Best Speaker award.
This was when I learned the most important thing about myself: I may have difficulties speaking, but I never back down when standing up for myself, my beliefs, or others. I still stand by the quote my 9th-grade science teacher shared: “If you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for everything.”

GOALS

I am the first child in my immediate family to attend university, and I truly believe there is a beauty in starting with nothing. My ultimate goal is to leave my name behind in every room I enter. I approach every assignment with the intention that, two years from now, my teachers will still use it as an example of excellence. Above all, I promised myself that I would choose a career where I can give a voice to those who have lost theirs. I want to provide a platform for my people because I know exactly what it’s like to feel silenced.
